After the terrible period of producers’ strike that had literally got Bollywood on standstill, it was Kabir Khan directed NEW YORK that had broken the jinx. While the film went on to complete 50 days at the box office as recently as the weekend gone, now comes Sabbir Khan’s KAMBAKKHT ISHQ which would be celebrating its 50th day at theaters today. The film proved to be yet another huge money spinner at the box office and as per the makers, EROS International, it even went on to take the biggest ever opening in the history of Indian cinema.
For Akshay Kumar too, the film came as a huge relief as the film had to work in a major way for him before he ends the year with BLUE and DE DANA DAN, two more expensive films. Though critics were yet again quite harsh on KAMBAKKHT ISHQ, audiences showed that they had a mind of their own. They flocked in dozens to the theaters and made sure that in the opening weekend itself, the film turned out to be a safe preposition.
The film did manage to open quite a few debates around Hindi cinema turning regressive or the entire portrayal of women in the film or the sheer gimmicks which KAMBAKKHT depended upon. In fact at places, the hatred factor has continued to be so prevalent that reams are being spent till date on how KAMBAKKHT ISHQ was perhaps the worst film of the year.
However, the fact remains that none of that really harmed KAMBAKKHT ISHQ as it went on to have a long stay at the box office and is now in its 8th week. Of course the arrival of newer and successful films like LOVE AAJ KAL and KAMINEY has resulted in a diminished print count for the film. Still, with the film’s home video being expected to hit the stands soon, it would be picture clear if the entire argument around KAMBAKKHT ISHQ being perhaps unsuitable for family audiences holds true or not.
