Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan may have to swallow a humble pie as both of them lost to south actor Prakash Raaj in the ‘Best Actor’ category of the 55th National Film Awards announced in New Delhi.
Raaj was named the winner for his role in Priyadarshan’s Tamil film ’Kanchivaram’ which depicts the lives of silk weavers of Kanchipuram during the pre-Independence era. The film was also named the Best Movie.
The only consolation for the Bollywood Khans was that their films won awards in different categories. Taare Zameen Par was named the winner of the Best Family Welfare Entertainment award, while the SRK-starrer Chak De India won the award for Best Overall Entertainment.
Prasoon Joshi won award for Best Lyrics for his song ‘Maa’ in ‘Taare Zameen Par’ while Shankar Mahadevan was named the Best Singer for the same song. Shreya Ghoshal was named the Best Female Playback Singer for Jab We Met, while the Best Art Direction award went to Om Shanti Om.
Director Feroz Abbas Khan won the Best Screenplay award and actor Darshan Jariwala was named the Best Supporting Actor award for Anil Kapoor’s home production Gandhi My Father.
The Best Actress award went to Kannada actress Uma Shri for Girish Kasaravalli’s film ‘Gulabi Talkies’.
Malayalam filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who has already won six National Awards, was named the Best Director for his film ’Naalu Pennungal’.
