Four years back she was ’heard’ in PAHELI (2005) that had featured Amitabh Bachchan in the special appearance of ’Gadariya’. Why ’heard’? Because in the film she was the ’voice’ of the female puppet and acted as a ’sutradhaar’. Along with Naseruddin Shah, who was the voice of a male puppet, she had made a rare big screen appearance though she was missed being ’seen’ on the screen.
Now she would finally be seen in a film featuring Amitabh Bachchan. We are talking about ALADIN where Ratna Pathak Shah has a small but important role to play.
When contacted, the lady in the question confirmed her presence in the film, "I play the owner of a canteen in Riteish’s college. I am like a mother figure to him. Since he is a parentless boy, he is quite a loner and a shy boy. He trusts me though and there is a strong bond between us."
In the past, Ratna Pathak Shah hasn’t done too many films, though she has been quite prominent in TV, courtesy her SARABHAI V/S SARABHAI act that continues to enjoy good viewer-ship even till date in spite of only re-runs playing.
"I am quite selective about films and the last one which I did was JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA. Something special has to be there for me to be seen on the big screen. Along with JAANE TU...YA JAANE NA, ALADIN was the only other film that really made me say ’yes’", she says.
One has to agree. After all for an actor who has only done a handful of films like MANDI (1983), HEAT AND DUST, MIRCH MASALA (1987) and YUN HOTA TO KYA HOTA (2006) to name a few, Ratna Pathak Shah would indeed have found something special in ALADIN.
With music by Vishal and Shekhar, ALADIN is co-produced by Sunil Lulla from Eros International and Sujoy Ghosh’s Boundscript. The film is all set for 23rd October release, a week after Diwali.
