Though he has been shooting a film in Philadelphia, Saif Ali Khan is no less shocked than any Indian over the recent attacks in Mumbai. The actor says Indians should remain united in this time of crisis.
Strong reactions have come from many films celebrities in the wake of 26/11 carnage. While in Mumbai, B-Town folks have taken to the streets to protest against an inapt governance and poor security, Saif has written an open letter condemning the attacks and calling for unity in a country with diverse religions.
“The government has failed us again. Politicians are advertising for your votes while the bodies of the dead are not yet cremated…Everyone, as usual, is gaining his own mileage from a deplorable situation. The Taj in flames... 60 people shot dead at the CST…Terror has come home,” Saif wrote the chilling words in his e-mailed letter
Saif also feels that Islam, the religion to which he belongs, has been hijacked by fundamentalists.
“I think there’s no voice of liberal Islam anywhere to be heard today, which is why I choose to express my anguish at what’s taking place around us today. We have either the fundamentalist forces or someone blowing up the place. As an Indian and a Muslim, I feel like expressing my condemnation and outright disgust at any party killing innocent people in the name of God, Allah or whatever we choose to call Him,” Saif wrote.
Given the sensitive situation in India, Saif appeals for unity.
“There are strong communal feelings running through all stratas of our society…Indians must unite as Indians and not split under any circumstances on any line… Let’s get it right this time and vote for the government that we believe in and then stand by them. Let us unite on this issue as Indians,” Saif insisted.
Incidentally, the film Saif is shooting in the US with Kareena Kapoor is based on the subject of terrorism.
