Singing legend Asha Bohsle turns 75 today, and is bringing out a new album to celebrate her diamond jubilee.
The new record will have romantic songs, to show that the lady is still in her period of optimism. Her last major record was Asha & Friends, in which she sung duets with other celebrities, most notably Brett Lee and Sanjay Dutt.
The current album will feature TV star Kinshuk Mahajan in a video.
Always in the shadow of her great older sister Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle broke out in the 60s and 70s through an identity for her that was crafted by her husband, RD Burman.
The identity was young, extroverted and fun-loving, as exemplified by Zeenat Aman’s Chura Liya Hai, as opposed to Lata’s classical and introverted singing. This did not mean Asha was a limited singer. She was very good with classical was well, singing In Aankhon ki Masti for Umrao Jaan.
At the age of 75, Asha has been singing professionally for 65 years. Her first song for a movie was Chala Chala Nav Bala for the Marathi film Majha Bal in 1943.
Through the decades she has been the voice of the most popular Bollywood actresses.
Trained at a very young age by her father Master Dinanath, she comes from a family of musicians. Brother Hridaynath is a music director.
Before RD Burman redefined her, Asha’s best work came with OP Nayyar who used her voice in Tumsa Nahin Dekha and Naya Daur.
